Theodor Gaude, born in Wesel in 1782, “escaped from a merchant’s apprenticeship and took up the guitar.
In Paris he matured into a master. In 1814 he set out on a successful concert tour to Russia, but an illness
detained him in Hamburg. After his recovery he settled there permanently as a highly respected teacher of his
instrument.” (Josef Zuth, Handbuch der Laute und Gitarre)
Gaude composed more than eighty works for guitar. From 1817 to 1833 the musical periodicals carried an
uninterrupted succession of announcements and reviews of his compositions.
He dedicated his Sonata for Flute and Guitar, op. 24, “à son ami
Raphael Dressler”.
